Veteran Dedication: LVRSL Main Service 2018:
We now dedicate and honour this main service to a veteran of WW2 and one of the great members of the Lenah Valley RSL, Vernon Thomas McTye.
Vern lived his early life in Dysart before the family moved to Hobart. He enlisted in the army and after basic training was transferred to the Engineers, or as they are better known, the ginger beers.
Vern saw action in the southwest pacific area, New Guinea, Borneo and the Solomon Islands ending up in Rabaul repairing local infrastructure.
At the end of WW2, Vern returned to Hobart and joined Glenorchy RSL before marrying a local Lenah Valley girl, Doreen Dann. He then transferred his membership to the newly formed Lenah Valley RSL in 1948.
Vern was very active in the RSL and served on the Lenah Valley committee for over of 20 years, 13 of them as President. He dedicated most of his life to his club and the RSL.
He was made a life member of the RSL and Lenah Valley RSL then was awarded the highest honour of the RSL the Merit Medal in 2002.
Vern maintained his interest and membership of the club until his passing.
A great servant of the club.
We thank him for his dedication and service to our Country, Community and the Lenah Valley RSL.
